Job Description:

The Department of Chemistry is recruiting for a Research Assistant in Mass Spectrometry. The applicant will work on multiple research projects with focus on cross-departmental collaborations, focussing on sample preparation and analysis as well as data processing using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF) and LC-MS platforms, related to COVID-19.

Reporting to Professor James McCullagh (Director of the Mass Spectrometry Research Facility) the role will work with experienced doctoral and post-doctoral researchers in the Department of Chemistry, closely liaising with colleagues in the Department of Biochemistry and the Nuffield Department of Medicine. The role will develop skills in project management, data analysis and presentation of results within a cross-disciplinary research context.

The responsibilities will include assisting the group to conduct research experiments, developing and performing comprehensive assays, preparing samples for mass spectrometry analysis, analysing samples and data and providing routine maintenance, laboratory and administrative support.

The successful candidate will hold an undergraduate degree in chemistry, biochemistry or a related analytical field, including having had experience of generic laboratory skills such as pipetting, solvent preparation and weighing chemicals. They will have previous experience working in a mass spectrometry or other analytical lab linked to sample analysis. They will have good communication skills, be highly organised and collaborative and demonstrate an ability to work efficiently and supportively in a laboratory environment.

Applications for the vacancy are to be made online. You will be required to upload a supporting statement as part of your application.
