About Us
We are one of three directly funded MRC research institutes and enjoy close links with our partners at Imperial College London and at the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. Based at Hammersmith Hospital our research focuses on strengthening the basic science underpinning our understanding of human diseases and the translation of such high quality research into a clinical setting.
About the Role
You will be responsible for developing a long term strategy for providing world class mass spectrometry based proteomic and metabolomics capabilities at the LMS, and for maintaining and running a state-of-the-art mass spectrometry facility which meets the needs of the LMS, including a service to users.
Using world class mass spectrometry resources, the post-holder will work collaboratively with research groups throughout the LMS to support their studies. In addition, the post-holder will be responsible for maintaining and developing cutting-edge techniques and approaches required to carry out proteomics- and metabolomics-based research within the Institute, and to assist and train groups in the LMS in the application of these techniques.
Appointees at the Band 2 level of salary will also will be responsible for the development of new methods and implementation of existing methods and protocols within the facility. You will develop and maintain suitable data processing and data analysis workflows using either open-source software, commercial software packages or in-house developed custom script, manage existing collaborations, and establish new collaborations. You will have the opportunity to contribute as a senior scientist within the LMS to the Institute’s aims for public engagement and translation and exploitation, recognising opportunities for the creation of intellectual property and co-operating in patent protection and exploitation.
About You
You will need a PhD and post-doctoral experience including practical involvement in proteomics and biological mass spectrometry, with a good track record of publications and presentations at meetings. You will have proven ability in mass spectrometry, developing methodology, and applying the technique to cutting edge biological problems, and evidence for successful and relevant scientific collaborations. Extensive knowledge of procedures for the identification and quantification of proteins and metabolites is essential.
Candidates for the Band 2 level will have proven experience of leading research projects in mass spectrometry in fields relevant to the LMS. You will have experience of running a service, and of team leadership, including motivation of staff, performance management, employee development and delegation. You will have worked in an interdisciplinary environment, collaborating with computational scientists to meet proteomics and metabolomics analysis needs, and be able to provide evidence of initiating and sustaining collaborations with other research groups across a range of disciplines on biology.
Applications which do not provide a cover letter will not be considered.
Choosing to come to work at the MRC (part of UKRI) means that you will have access to a whole host of benefits from a defined benefit pension scheme and excellent holiday entitlement to access to employee shopping/travel discounts and salary sacrifice cycle to work scheme, as well as the chance to put the MRC and UKRI on your CV in the future.
