The Irish Equine Centre (IEC) wishes to recruit an Equine Anti-Doping Scientist to join its Forensics/Mass Spectrometry Laboratory in Johnstown, Naas, Co Kildare.  Established in 1983, the Irish Equine Centre is an independent, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to ensuring the wellbeing of Ireland’s horse population through the provision of high-quality laboratory services to the horse industry including equine drug testing.

The Forensics/Mass Spectrometry Laboratory is an ISO17025 accredited facility that performs screening testing for clients from the equine, food and agriculture sectors for the detection of prohibited and permitted substances to international legislative limits. Test methods currently used in the section include Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography-Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (UPLC/TOF-MS) and UPLC with Tandem Mass Spectrometry (UPLC/MS-MS).

The successful candidate will report to the Unit Head and will be responsible for:

  1. The development and validation of anti-doping screening methods to the ISO 17025 standard for submission to the national accrediting body.
  2. Routine screening of samples for the presence of prohibited and permitted substances.
  3. Quality assurance of test methods and general laboratory administration. 

Please note that this is not a new graduate position.

Candidates should have the following:

Essential Requirements:

  • Bachelor or Master’s Degree in Chemistry/ Analytical Science or related discipline, Minimum Level 8 Qualification.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in anti-doping testing in a ISO17025 accredited or other regulated laboratory
  • Experience of development and validation of LC-MS based screening methods.
  • Good analytical trouble shooting skills, experience in various sample preparation and clean up techniques. 

Desirable Requirements:

In addition, the ideal candidate would have:

  • A strong ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • The ability to work to deadlines within a busy laboratory.
  • Previous experience using Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) desirable and Quality Document Management Systems (Q Pulse) advantageous.
  • Experienced and proficient in use of statistical package(s) suitable for laboratory verifications/validations.
