EMS2010 5th National Meeting on Environmental Mass Spectrometry
24th March 2010
BMSS SIG meeting
University of Chester
The EMS2010 meeting is being arranged for one day, March 24, 2010, and the theme for the meeting is current trends in the Applications of Mass Spectrometry to Environmental and Food Matrix Analysis. The meeting is being jointly convened by the Environmental Mass spectrometry and Food & Nutrition Special Interest Groups of the BMSS and will form part of a conference week of three meetings, March 22 - 26, 2010, being organised at the University of Chester by Prof. Chris Smith, covering also Nanotechnology & Food, and, Food Science & Technology.
Plenary Lecture
Dr Enrico Davoli of the Capo Laboratorio Spettrometria di Massa Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche "Mario Negri", Milan, has accepted an invitation to present the plenary lecture entitled ‘A Review of Advanced MS Techniques in environmental studies: advantages and current limitations’.
Keynote presentations
Food and Nutrition
Dr Bert Poepping, Eurofins UK, ‘Allergen detection, quantitation and confirmation in Nuts, Cereals, Milk etc by LC/MS/MS’.
Environmental
David Wood, Laboratory Director, Scientific Analysis Laboratories Ltd., Manchester, 'MS techniques in environmental analysis- a view from a commercial analytical laboratory'
Abstracts (< 50 Kbyte, single A4 page, without images or tables) on applications of Environmental Mass Spectrometry can be submitted for inclusion in the www.analyticalmethodologycentre.co.uk Forum page (as an individual presenter forum) to PeterBaugh682@hotmail.com or peter@analyticalmethodology.co.uk. Exhibitor logos and information about commercial products can similarly be included in the forum. Short presentations in Microsoft PowerPoint or Acrobat format (≤ 5 MByte) are required for uploading to the document page for viewing and downloading in the EMS2010 repository file or EMSexhibition for commercial displays.
Please note that if you wish to view the forum you will need to apply for a user name and password to log on.
Registration for the website will allow access to the fora for presentation titles and abstracts but from the deadline, March 01, 2010, and until after the date of the meeting access will be restricted to bona fide delegates who have paid registration fees.
4th Forensic Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (FIRMS) 2010 Conference
12th – 14th April 2010
Washington DC, USA
The conference will focus on the use of isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) in the forensics field. It is hosted by the FBI.
ProteoMMX: Strictly Quantitative
19th - 21st April 2010
Queens Hotel, Chester, UK
As the field of proteomics matures, there is a gradual movement towards characterisation and quantification studies. This meeting will address the challenges and strategies for quantitative proteomics. The short meeting will focus predominantly on MS based quantification. The conference will be held at the Queen's Hotel, Chester opposite the train station, and a 10 minute walk from the city centre. As well as being easy to reach, the hotel offers first class accommodation and very good conference facilities. The meeting is organised by Rob Beynon (Liverpool, r.beynon@liv.ac.uk) and Simon Hubbard (Manchester, simon.hubbard@manchester.ac.uk).
Topics to be addressed include: Label-free and label-mediated quantification, informatics for quantification, data standards for quantitative proteomics data, quantification of post-translational modifications, in vitro labels and metabolic labelling, including SILAC and dynamic SILAC. Each thematic session will start with an overview seminar/tutorial and will be particularly relevant to newcomers to the area or to research students.

Direct Analysis Mass Spectrometry: Techniques and Applications
21st April 2010
Alderley Park Conference Centre, AstraZeneca, Alderley Park, Cheshire.
The development and application of ambient ionisation techniques is a rapidly growing area within mass spectrometry, the availability of ionisation in the open-air makes sample analysis particularly simple and no sample preparation may be required. The variety of ionisation techniques (DART, DESI, DAPCI, ASAP, LDTD, FlashQuant etc) have been applied to a broad range of applications and this seminar will be an opportunity to find out more about these techniques.
